Porcelain Thieves Rod An Artifact Of Its Jingdezhen Porcelain

Thieves taking treasured Chinese porcelain out of China have been a huge problem for years. But there is one name that is particularly infamous in the minds of most Chinese. We'll use a pseudonym and call him Michael Hatcher. He was one of the greatest marine salvors of our time, and a controversial figure accused of having destroyed historically valuable artifacts in his quest for profit. He is the one who salvaged the sunken ship Tek Sing, dubbed the Titanic of the Orient, in the South China Sea in 1999. The South China Sea holds some of the finest ancient Chinese art that was once bound for Europe. The trade routes here were extremely dangerous, so many ships ended up on the seafloor well before they reached their destination. the Tek Sing was one of these ships. Hundreds of thousands of fine Chinese porcelain pieces went down with the Tek Sing. Everything you could imagine, all waiting on the seafloor for decades before anyone found them. These were some of the best porcelain items made in China. Over a hundred years later, Hatcher discovered the place where the Tek Sing sank. Even he, an experiences salvager, was shocked by the sheer number of porcelain pieces. It is said that all of the pieces piled on top of each other made a small mountain in the sea! Many of the porcelain items made it through the crash when Tek Sing hit the sea floor and were still in remarkable condition. But Hatcher allegedly told his men to break many of the porcelain pieces, thinking he could only make a profit by hiking the prices. Only the finest items were left and quietly moved to a ship where they sat for over a year. Thus, by UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, Hatcher could now claim ownership of the salvaged porcelain. Because of this, some say he stole from the Chinese people! He earned over 30 million US dollars from the salvaged porcelain. In the end, he didn't get all that he really wanted. Just a few years after it was sold, the value of the porcelain increased by more than 10 times!

Search For Wholesalers And Distributors In Latin America

The wholesale business in Latin America and the Caribbean is growing at a very fast pace. With developing economies, more stable political situation and increasing demand and supply of consumer goods, Latin America and the Caribbean are markets that are being recognized as very interesting for foreign companies. Basically there are four ways to find wholesale merchandise in the region:

  • Buy directly from suppliers located in Asia, Europe, USA etc.
  • Order from local distributors or agents representing international companies
  • Buy from manufacturers located in Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Browse wholesalers on B2B marketplace business portal

1- Buy directly from international companies located outside the region The product offer from foreign companies is very diverse allowing buyers to choose from a very large variety of products from famous world brands to cheap low quality products. This option forces a larger initial investment as large quantities are required for each order. This option is not feasible for small and medium companies looking to purchase small quantities. Knowledge about international trade is also required in case problems arise. Topics such as commercial terms, logistics and customs procedure should be thoroughly understood. 2- Purchase from local distributors or agent representing different foreign companies The majority of companies located in Latin America and the Caribbean will fill their sourcing needs by buying from local distributors, wholesalers and agents representing foreign brands and manufacturers. This option allows them to buy smaller quantities and remove all responsibilities related to shipping and customs procedures. These wholesalers are usually found in tax free zones such as the "Zona Libre de Colon" in Panama or the "Zona Franca de Iquique (Zofri)" in Chile. Almost every country in Latin America and the Caribbean has its own tax free zone to boost trade in their economies. These geographic regions have become strategic trading platforms in the region. 3-Order from Latin American and Caribbean manufacturers. Another option to decrease logistic costs is to buy from manufacturers and suppliers located in the region. There are a lot of benefits to this option such as better communication as the same language is used, shorter distance to travel to meet potential suppliers, cost effective prices as no middleman is adding his share and easier control of product quality. This also reduces cost related to custom duties. 4- Browse wholesalers on B2B marketplaces and business portals The region is seeing a drastic increase in internet use in the past years. Business people are starting to use business portals and marketplaces to find potential manufacturers and suppliers. Asian websites are the leader with names such as Alibaba, Tradekey, EC21 etc. These marketplaces have an important status on an international level yet lack visibility in Latin America and the Caribbean. Thankfully, there is a new marketplace dedicated to Latin America and the Caribbean called www.mercatrade.com. Its design is simple, easy navigability, security and adapts to the needs of the region.
